I’m a researcher in human and artificial intelligence, interested in the relationship between language and knowledge. Drawing on computer science, linguistics and philosophy, I support the view that intelligence is embodied and that AI is a cultural technology that does not think or feel.
Writing
I’m the author of Culture & Anarchy – partly a newsletter about technology and humanism, and partly an experimental podcast where I explore how philosophical problems are often generated by psychological anxieties.
I’m also currently drafting a book on pseudoscience in the AI industry and I’ve published academic work on the biological origins of language.
Consulting
Since 2019, I’ve worked in private industry on AI alignment and reasoning systems. I now offer consulting services to UK startups that need help building bridges between tech stack and product strategy. Here’s an example of a talk I gave on the promise of neurosymbolic models for enterprise settings.
